A few weeks ago, I joined a meaningful program called Saint Mary’s Way at my school, SMP Santa Maria Bandung. For my ASAS project, I needed to write a blog, so I decided to share this experience. I was assigned to accompany the children’s faith formation program at GSG Cinunuk, a place that is special to me because I first joined children’s faith formation there when I was four years old. Even before this project, I had already been helping there for about three years.
The program ran for three Sundays in a row. I was not able to attend the first Sunday because I had another activity. Even so, I prepared the materials: a slideshow, songs, and prayers. On that day, one of my friends also could not come due to a family loss, so only one friend was able to help. Thankfully, the senior youth mentors who usually guide the children supported the activity and made sure everything went smoothly.
The second Sunday became the most memorable part of the program. My friends and I arrived one hour early to prepare a BKSN 2025 Tree made from recycled paper. The children wrote short messages on apple-shaped papers and then pasted them onto the tree. After the closing prayer for BKSN, we sang and danced together. This meeting felt special because my friends began to step out of their comfort zones. We worked closely with the children while helping them complete the activity and a crossword puzzle we had prepared.
On the last Sunday, which coincided with the opening of the Month of the Rosary, I created a large paper rosary using buffalo paper. We also printed small decorations for the children to paste freely. Before the crafting session, the senior mentors led the Missionary Rosary prayer. After praying and creating together, we ended the day with simple movements and songs. At the end, my friends and I shared our impressions and said goodbye to the children and mentors.
When the program ended, we presented our experience. One parent encouraged us to continue serving and not stop here. This message really motivated me. Through SMW, I became more confident, more caring, and more willing to talk to new people. I also grew more excited to join other ministries like altar serving, psalm singing, and volunteering at the diocese.
In the end, this experience taught me the values shown by Mother Mary: obedience, humility, faithfulness, and compassion. Just as Mary always said “yes” to God’s call, I want to keep saying “yes” to every chance to serve and grow. I hope others, especially my friends, can also find the courage to step out of their comfort zones and discover their own place to serve.
